When God Made You: A Book Review for Multicultural Children’s Book Day

I was given a copy of this book by WaterBrook (a division of Penguin Random House) in return for my honest review.

I love picture books of all kinds, and when the opportunity arose to participate in Multicultural Children’s Book Day, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to check out a new, to me,  picture book.

When God Made You

When God Made You is a beautiful, rhyming picture book written by Matthew Paul Turner and illustrated by David Catrow.

From the publisher:

From early on, children are looking to discover their place in the world and longing to understand how their personalities, traits, and talents fit in. The assurance that they are deeply loved and a unique creation in our big universe is certain to help them spread their wings and fly.

Through playful, charming rhyme and vivid, fantastical illustrations, When God Made You inspires young readers to learn about their own special gifts and how they fit into God’s divine plan as they grow, explore, and begin to create for themselves.

This book is a delightful reminder that we were all created in the image of God and for a purpose. That purpose is to be ourselves and to use the talents we have all been gifted.

I particularly love the playfulness of children being encouraged and celebrated.

From the book:

‘Cause God loves you creating, your true self displaying

when light on the inside through art is portraying

When you make-believe, the stories conceived

the heroics, the magic, those tricks up your sleeve

When you dance alone,

spinning like a cyclone

being whoever, whatever,

in a world all your own

God smiles and here’s why-in the spark of your eye

a familiar reflection shines bright from inside.

The illustrations are fantastic, I’ll be looking for other books by David Catrow. They are so colorful and full of movement. You are carried through the book by the beautiful story of a little girl beginning in the everyday setting of her home.

However, she ventures out and encounters a street artist who is upset by his fading flower. To cheer him up, she creates a beautiful scene which continues to grow until they are flying through the air on brightly colored birds.

After their vivid journey, you will find her sitting with her younger sister reading a picture book. It couldn’t be more charming.

About Bethany Ishee

Bethany is the mom of six always homeschooled children who one day realized she'd lost herself in the process, probably under a pile of laundry. Her eclectic style of homeschooling draws upon Classical to Unschooling and everything in between.  While homeschooling her children and writing about learning outside of school, she tries to find time to read a book, drink coffee, and pay the bills.
